- Prisons Sector is one of Interior Ministry sectors; responsible for the enforcement of sentences issued by the judiciary against violators of legitimacy and order.
- The sector is authorized to enforce laws, regulations, orders, and instructions relevant to prisons.
- It is also charged with the implementation of the modern penitentiary policy and the task of providing prisoners with social, sanitary, cultural, educational and sportive services. In addition, it endeavors to apply vocational rehabilitation programs to avail prisoners the opportunity to become good citizens and enable them to reintegrate into society when released .
- The sector is presided over by a “First Assistant Minister of Interior” who is authorized to supervise all the departments affiliated to the sector and coordinate their various activities.

The Sector president is aided by two assistants:

- Assistant for financial and administrative affairs.
- Assistant for operations.

The sector is composed of four general departments (major and geographical), which are:

- General Department for Social Rehabilitation and Development (located at the Sector’s HQ),
- General Department for Central Zone Prisons (located at Tura Prisons Complex),
- General Department for Delta Prisons (Located at El-Hadra Prison in Alexandria), and
- General Department for Upper Egypt Prisons (Located at El-Fayoum Prison).
